349,703 megawatt-hours of reasons to live in Canberra

By Ben Faulks

This year, construction begins on two windmill farms – the Crookwell 2 Wind Farm and the Sapphire Wind Farm – that will end up powering over 90,000 homes in Canberra, according to the Canberra Times. The article points out how these developments mean that renewable energy prices are now at an ultimate low, something Shane Rattenbury says is setting a clear path for extended benefits for the ACT.

"A secure, renewable energy powered future is achievable if we invest in upgrading our energy network, driving investment in renewable energies and managing the transition away from coal," Mr Rattenbury suggests.

So, let's take a look how this prospect of a more sustainable future makes Canberra an even more attractive place to live.

Sustainable energy for Canberra

Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Simon Corbell, explained in an official statement that in the four years since the government released its Climate Change Action Plan 2, the ACT has systematically begun auctioning energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.

As Canberra's reputation for sustainable energy policy grows, the two windmill farms in Crockwell and Hornsdale will have a big impact on the city.

"Both projects are providing extensive investment packages for the ACT economy, with over $180 million to fund research, innovation, jobs and education in the renewable energy sector here in Canberra. […] The economic benefits that will flow from successful reverse auction projects now total more than $500 million," Mr Corbell pointed out.

"The proximity of the Crookwell Wind Farm to the ACT means many flow-on benefits for local trades," he said.

This means that as global attention and international investment in the area grows, Canberra will see massive opportunities in terms of job growth and a more sustainable lifestyle choice.

The Crookwell development is set to deliver 304,099 megawatt-hour and the Sapphire location will produce 349,703 megawatt-hours.What this means in terms of benefits for homeowners, is that renewable energy isn't only going to be more affordable, but available as well.
