5 reasons to move to Canberra

By Ben Faulks

Nearly two in five Aussies live in Sydney or Melbourne, according to CoreLogic. If you're a resident of one of these big cities looking for a sea change, there are plenty of reasons to consider Canberra as an option. Owning or renting property in Canberra, and Belconnen in particular, offers you great education and employment prospects, happening nightlife, awesome outdoor activities – and is much more affordable to boot! Here are a few reasons why you may want to make a move to the Australian capital.

1. World class education

Australia has top quality universities all around the country and some of the finest tertiary institutions can be found right here in the ACT. The Australian National University is currently listed 47th in the Times World University Rankings. Up-and-coming University of Canberra is also rising in these rankings (and is conveniently right next door to Belconnen!)

For elite athletes and those looking for a career in the Australian armed forces, Canberra is also the place to be – the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Defence Force Academy are located here.

2. Solid employment prospects

Canberra is a particularly attractive place for job seekers, with particular demand right now in the construction and cyber security industries.

"There has been real growth in earnings offered in construction roles," said Hays ACT regional director Jim Roy, speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald in January. "And there is going to be continuing demand for these skills in the ACT."

"We are seeing more demand for IT security, from both private and public sectors," he added.

3. Thriving nightlife

With a large student population, Canberra's got a load of affordable places to wind down after work on a weeknight. You definitely won't find yourself stuck indoors!

This will particularly attract young people from Sydney who have been faced with strict lockout laws in recent years. These have seen the city's once flourishing nightlife decline and many live music venues forced to close due to lack of patronage. Whatever your music taste or preferred beverage, you'll find something for you among the many bars, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants in our lively city.

4. Winter sports

Many people think "cold" when they envision living in Canberra – and yes, things can get a little chilly in the winter months. The great thing about this, though, is a more diverse climate that means you can make the most of winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.

Skiing resorts at Thredbo and Perisher are only 2.5 hours' drive from Canberra (compared to 5+ hours from Sydney or Melbourne). You won't need to trek so far to get to the snow.

5. Affordability

There's been a lot of discussion about housing affordability over the last few years, and Canberra is often positioned as a more affordable alternative to the pricey property markets in other Australian cities.

Housing prices are increasing in Canberra as well, so it may not be so affordable forever. The good news, though, is that it's still much cheaper to buy and rent in Australia's capital than it is in either Sydney or Melbourne. Belconnen median house prices are currently at $400,000 and rent averages $400 per week.

For people under 35, who make up the majority of Belconnen's residents, this is good news. If you snap up some Belconnen real estate now, you could save a lot on your mortgage and see the value of your property increase significantly in the coming years.
