5 things to do this Canberra Day long weekend

By Ben Faulks

This March 13, Canberra turns the ripe old age of 104. Australia's capital is celebrating the Canberra Day long weekend with plenty of fun events to keep the whole family entertained. If you're not already living in Canberra, prepare to be persuaded that it's time to move!

1. Explore the city by night

The city will be lit up during the evenings as part of the Enlighten Canberra festival until March 12. This event offers a jam-packed program of live music, art installations and spectacular light projections. Illuminated designs will appear on six of Canberra's most iconic buildings, including Questacon, Australian Parliament House and the National Portrait Gallery.

Short film festival Lights! Canberra! Action! is also being held as part of Enlighten. The best films will be screened from 8 p.m on March 10 at the Senate Rose Gardens. Pack a picnic and set up camp for some free evening entertainment.

2. Fill your belly

In conjunction with the Enlighten festival, night noodle markets are being held every evening until March 12 from 5 p.m. You can chow down on delectable street food from some of Canberra's best Asian and Western eateries. Get your hands on some pad thai, Vietnamese pho or Japanese gyoza dumplings, and indulge in some Gelato Messina for dessert.

3. Go to a rugby league match

The Canberra Raiders NRL team will be playing a home game against the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday March 11. Go along and support the local team as they battle it out against last year's NRL Grand Final champions at GIO stadium.

4. Listen to some tunes

This family-friendly event is being held at Commonwealth Park on Sunday March 12. Fans of ABBA will be delighted to sing along as the Canberra Symphony Orchestra plays some of the Swedish pop group's greatest hits.

5. Witness a colourful display

If you're willing to get up early on March 11, you'll bear witness to the incredible site of hundreds of hot air balloons being launched from the lawns of Old Parliament House into the sky above the capital. The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is one of the world's longest-running hot air ballooning events, and this year will include balloons with unique designs from all over the world.
