ACT dedication to sustainability good for home owners across region

By Ben Faulks

With the winter weather beginning to bear down hard on the nation, keeping your Belconnen real estate warm and cosy will become more important – not only for comfort's sake, but also to help keep your family happy and healthy in the long run.

Luckily, the Australian Capital Territory government has recently shown their strong dedication to creating and maintaining an environmentally sustainable climate across the state, which will help you do your part towards saving the planet while maintaining a great living standard.

Renewable energy has been a government focus for the past two years, with ACT Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell highlighting the successful solar auction processes seen in 2012 and 2013 as evidence. The recent announcement of a 200 megawatt wind auction also contributes to this renewable image.

Both these initiatives will go a long way towards achieving the state's goal of providing 90 per cent of the region's electricity from renewable sources, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent.

"This government practises what it preaches, and is working hard to achieve carbon neutrality in its own government operations through investment in energy efficient systems estimated to save $1.2 million annually and reduce greenhouse gases by 5730 tonnes," said Mr Corbell in a June 5 statement.
