ACT region to receive funding for art centres

By Ben Faulks

The hallmark of a great area to raise a family in is the amount of funding the government pours back into it.

Property owners in Belconnen and Canberra will be delighted to know that the ACT chief minister, Andrew Barr, has kept his campaign promise. He recently developed an arts package full of grants and other types of funding worth $21.6million, with much of it going towards art galleries and museums, PS News reported.

Supporting the arts

The revelation came with Barr's announcement in March that the government would fund the second stage of the Belconnen Arts Centre upgrade, as Barr has set aside $15million specifically for the project. Features that have yet to be built include a new addition that functions as both a town hall and performance area, as well as increased exhibition space and improved workshops, according to the source.

"We know the vital role the arts play in offering an outlet for creative expression for people from all walks of life," Barr told the source. "They significantly add to the vibrancy and liveability of Canberra."

Capital was also included in the $21.6million fund for Design Canberra and the Canberra Writers festivals, and five other art centres in the area.

Family oriented

Governments across the world seem to be slashing the arts budgets to shore up deficits or improve science and math, so the move by Barr to develop a financial package, as well as increase the base level of project funding to $750,000, is an important gesture. It's a sign to families interested in purchasing real estate in Belconnen and surrounding areas that creativity and intellectual curiosity is welcome.

It doesn't necessarily come as a very big surprise, though, considering the amount of art galleries and museums located across ACT. The National Gallery of Australia is located in Canberra and even offers a kids' play space for when they get restless.

The Belconnen Arts Centre is a staple in the community. It offers a number of programs that serve people of all ages, and the funding from the ACT government will allow it to accommodate even more artists, performers and people inspired by their work.

If you're searching for the next home to raise a family, it'd be wise to pick an area that invests in the development of its community. For more information on property in Belconnen, contact a Ray White representative today.
