Belconnen among the country’s best educated regions

By Ben Faulks

We've got good news for residents (and would-be residents) of Canberra: not only does living in Australia's capital keep you healthy, it also keeps you wise. The Australian National University (ANU) recently ranked in seventh place in the 2017 Times Higher Education Rankings of the world's most international universities, beating out the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the University of Sydney at numbers 14, 18, 21 and 23 respectively.

Canberra home to one of the country's top universities

ANU has consistently performed well in global university rankings. In the Times' Global University Employability Ranking last year, it came in at number 22, well ahead of any other Australian institution. ANU also has the highest number of Nobel Laureates of all Australian universities. The ACT government capitalised on the good reputation of its tertiary education sector by recently launching an initiative to promote studying in the country's capital, as the Sydney Morning Herald reported on February 1.

The ACT Australia's best educated state

This rep for excellence in education is not just confined to Canberra; it's something that characterises the ACT as a whole. AMP.NATSEM's 2012 Income and Wealth Report found that the state contained the highest percentage of people with a Year 12 education, and that 25 per cent of 15-64 year olds held an undergraduate degree – well above the national average of 17 per cent. Given these stats, it's probably not surprising that unemployment is low compared to other regions of Australia (3.8 per cent).

Tertiary training outside academia also encouraged

As a result of the high level of education of ACT residents, great value is placed on educating the next generation, but that doesn't mean that the emphasis is solely on academia. Canberra's Australian Institute of Sport is an elite facility that trains some of Australia's best athletes, while the Australian Defence Force Academy combines university education with military training to produce our future Navy, Army and Air Force recruits.

What does all this mean for Belconnen residents?

Whether you're renting in Belconnen while studying, or are thinking about purchasing some Belconnen real estate, you can rest easy in the knowledge that you and your loved ones are receiving the very best education in the country.

Aside from its exceptionally well-educated community, there are plenty of other reasons you may want to move to Canberra. To find out more about the Belconnen community, get in touch with us at Ray White Belconnen. We're more than happy to talk to you!
