Birthdays are made to be celebrated, and for the suburb of Belconnen, the celebration is just around the corner. Founded on 23 March 1966, the district is set to turn 50 today!
It seems like the years have just flown by, but what have the people of Belconnen achieved in that time?
Before 1966, Belconnen real estate was actually a part of Ginninderra, with city access to the district limited to a gravel track known as Weetangera Road. Consisting of a few rural properties, a police station, a post office and a small school, the land that we know as Belconnen these days barely existed. The district was suffering as schools closed and older settlers moved on.
However, as basic infrastructure, telephones and electricity entered the area, life returned to the district. The original town hall was planned and construction began, and since these early days Belconnen has gone from strength to strength. More people, houses and businesses entered the area, slowly becoming the vibrant, diverse and beautiful place that Canberrans know today.
But just how did people celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the district? On March 15th, Belconnen Community Council called a meeting to discuss that very subject, as well as a brief update on the Climate Change adaptation by the ACT government.
The community was asked to help make suggestions for some appropriate celebrations during this historic event. Such a community-driven event surely shows the strength of what locals around Belconnen can do. It's a huge moment for the district and the community at large.
