Fun in full bloom at Floriade this spring

By Ben Faulks

September marks the start of spring with temperate weather, budding flowers, and a booming property market. Spring sales make up 26 per cent of Australian property transactions according to CoreLogic, so anyone looking to buy real estate in Canberra is rubbing winter's dust from their eyes.

Canberra comes alive in September, with the annual Floriade festival welcoming in the best season of the year. The festival is celebration of the incredible horticulture and arts of Australia. If you're looking to relocate to Canberra, consider swinging through to view your next home and see Canberra at its most colourful from September 16 to October 15.

Thirty years of flowers

Floriade is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and is aiming higher than ever. Having pulled out all the stops for its floral display, Floriade will plant over a million bulbs and annuals in Commonwealth Park.

The display will feature numerous designs – some new, and others making a triumphant return from at previous Floriade events. One design made specifically for the anniversary will create the image of Salvador Dali-style melting clocks as tribute to the growing festival and the Australian Capital Territory's connection to art.

The stars are out tonight

A sprinkling of stardust in your eyes will kick the festival off this year. David Bowie tribute group The Ziggy Band will join the Canberra Symphony Orchestra to deliver an extremely special preview night concert.

The concert is an all-ages BYO-seating affair, inviting you to make yourself comfortable on the park's lawns. Feel free to pack a picnic dinner, as food is permitted into the event. No outside drinks are allowed, however – but fear not, as vendors of both food and drink will be on-site.

All day, all night

The festival will offer something for night owls and early risers alike, with an array of events from sunrise to sunset. During the day, the public will be invited to marvel at the floral displays and take part in floristry and photography workshops.

Your kids can make the most of the many amusement rides in the park, and you can enjoy a spot of shopping in the Floriade market. Local producers will be peddling the best of their artisan wares, and gourmet food trucks will be aplenty.

Two weekends of the festival will host the popular NightFest events. The park will be bejewelled with artistic lighting installations, granting a new perspective on the floral displays. A line-up of comedians, including Legally Brown star Nazeem Hussain, will fill the nights with laughter.
