If you're a bike enthusiast, then you may be pleased to hear that the ACT government is investigating the feasibility of introducing better cycling conditions between West Belconnen, Belconnen Town Centre and the rest of the city.
Commenting on the upgrades, the Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury discussed how there will be ongoing studies into "what active travel infrastructure, such as shared zones, upgraded paths and cycle ways, is needed to complete links in the path network."
Mr Rattenbury also went on to say that the improvements would likely include better lighting, signage and rest points for existing pathways.
All part of the plan
These investigations come about as a result of the community engagement with the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan, which identified a number of key issues for cyclists with real estate in Belconnen. This included the aforementioned lack of connectivity currently being investigated for improvement, as well as a general need for cycle lanes and secure bicycle parking.
The proposed changes will be welcomed by the cycling community, with suggested improvements in a survey conducted by Pedal Power including dedicated cycle paths, on-road cycling lanes and storage infrastructure.
The biking community is sure to be pleased by the inclusion of their concerns by the Belconnen Council, and these improvements are likely to attract more keen cyclists to the area.
Improvements for the whole of Belconnen
The Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan also includes a number of other improvements to connectivity, including better pavements and the expansion of the Canberra light rail to Belconnen. The plan, which involves overarching zoning and building changes to the town centre, will hopefully create a vibrant and quintessentially Canberra experience for visitors and residents alike.
