As mentioned by the 2015 ACT Budget, the inclusion and protection of all peoples in a fair society is a core value of the Australian government. While it's certainly an impressive statement to make, the ACT plans to put its money where its mouth is and accomplish just that to the best of its ability.
According to the budget, a hefty investment of more than $389million will be spent on creating opportunities and providing aid for vulnerable Canberrans from every walk of life.
The greatest single amount of funding ($160million) will be put toward supporting the homeless. Out of this total, $159.2million will be spent on public housing, either by renewing certain many of these urban areas or securing replacement housing. Over a four year program, the ACT government plans to replace 1,288 homes with modern and efficient dwellings.
Roughly $49.6million will also go toward support and caring for young people. This includes implementing the 'A Step Up for Our Kids' programme, building respite property and improving support for needy or vulnerable children.
Funding will also go toward caring for seniors in the form of flexible public transport systems and bulky waste collection services. Furthermore, over $1million will be invested into combating domestic and sexual violence through school programmes, public services and a domestic violence data framework.
