Dramatic Productions, an acting troupe local to Gungahlin, has recently been nominated for an impressive 12 nominations at the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) awards.
These awards, designed to provide recognition of local Canberra drama groups made up of non-professionals, is now in its tenth year of operation. Originally beginning with only six judges in 1995, the board grew to 17 in 2013 in order to provide a greater scope of available awards.
These awards include recognition of excellence in such areas as directorship, lighting, acting talent and choreography, with special mention for those in musicals or youth theatre.
A swathe of awards
Various members of Dramatic Productions have received 12 nominations across 9 categories, 11 of which were for Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods' and 1 for Jason Robert Brown's 'The Last Five Years'. This is a huge step forward for the group, who were begun only earlier this year, with 'Into the Woods' being their second ever production.
This recent recognition of excellence across the whole of Canberra can only be good news for the art-loving owners of Gungahlin real estate. Company director Richard Block, nominee for Best Director of a Musical or Variety Show, said the following to My Gungahlin on December 21:
"The talent we have here locally is quite extraordinary. There is almost no professional theatre produced locally and it is important that our Canberra actors are given more opportunities."
To aid this endeavour, Dramatic Productions is the only Canberra community drama group which pays its actors, enabling a solid future for local talent and providing a strong incentive for other residents to take up the art of the thespian.
