New road upgrades coming to Belconnen

By Ben Faulks

Road safety is a national concern. With recent reports predicting Australia is going to be missing its target of increasing road safety according to the Australian Automotive Association, this priority is more important than ever.

Thankfully, Belconnen real estate owners are going to see sweeping upgrades to the intersection of a pair of its major roads this year.

The curse of the Black Spot

One of the most major initiatives to help improve roads will be coming to Belconnen in the form of the Black Spot Programme. This national fund helps communities fund the repairs of nominated "black spot" roads that are considered to be dangerous. Upgrades can include things such as traffic signals or roundabouts – minor additions that can have a strong effect on reducing road crashes in these areas.

The intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Coulter Drive are going to be the recipients of this fund, which has had $500million of contributions from 2014 to 2015 and 2018 to 2019, along with an additional $200million from 2015 to 2016. However, for the purposes of these upgrades, Ginninderra Drive will only require $197,000 – fully funded by the Australian government.

"The improvements to the left-hand slip lane will make it safer for vehicles to turn left onto Ginninderra Drive from Coulter Drive by providing motorists a better line of sight to oncoming traffic," said ACT Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris.

"A new path will also be installed which will connect to the existing shared path in Florey. This upgrade will help cyclists with safe and convenient access to a connected shared path network."

These new upgrades are sure to be of benefit to those with Belconnen real estate, as well as any visitors to the suburb!
