Push for new recycling methods to help increase sustainability

By Ben Faulks

If you've started adopting cleaner, greener living standards into your Belconnen real estate, a recent release from the Australian Capital Territory government could be of great interest. Minister for territory and municipal services Shane Rattenbury launched the "Recycling – don't bag it!" campaign across the state last week, which aims to help cut down on the amount of mismanaged recycling in the region.

He called for recyclable materials to stop being put in plastic bags before being dumped because these have to go to the landfill instead of being compressed and reused. This is simply because the materials inside the bag cannot be verified, which leads them to be considered contaminated and unable to be properly recycled.

"This campaign aims to educate the Canberra community to change recycling habits of residents and reduce the amount of bagged recycling arriving at the Material Recycling Facility," said Mr Rattenbury in a 25 September statement.

With the growing popularity of sustainability sweeping Australia, knowing this information could make a huge difference to the cause.
