In the past we've talked about why Canberra is a great place to work. But what happens when the workweek is over and you find yourself with nothing to do? We've put together a list of seven things to do with a free weekend in Belconnen. If you're a current (or future) Belconnen resident and your calendar is looking a little bare this Saturday and Sunday, give some of these activities a try.
Start your Saturday with a bang by taking part in a timed 5K run. The Ginninderra parkrun is held every weekend at 8 a.m. in John Knight Memorial Park. It costs nothing to take part, and all that's asked is that you register online before your first run.
If you're not at your fittest, don't despair! The parkrun is for runners of all levels, so whether you're currently a couch potato or the next Mo Farah, you're welcome to join in. Even if you're not one for lacing up, you can still get involved, by signing up as a volunteer to help run the event.
If you're itching to get your caffeine fix, there are plenty of options in Belconnen to satisfy your needs. Chatterbox Espresso Bar, Cafe Birrigai, Black Pepper, and Social Bean are just a few of the many options to be found in the town centre. Some of these cafes also provide beautiful lake views, providing even more incentive to give them a visit.
Appreciate some works by local artists by paying a visit to the soon to be upgraded Belconnen Arts Centre – weekend opening hours are 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Upcoming exhibitions in August include the Emerging Artist Support Scheme Award, Flights of Fancy (Gillian Wilde), Poetry and Place (Dianne Firth), and The Art of Nature 2017 (Wildlife and Botanical Artists Inc.).
Belconnen is lucky to have shopper's paradise in the form of the Westfield mall. To get a taste of the variety on offer, consider what you can get from the following stores: clothing from Jacqui E, Just Jeans, Jeanswest and JayJays, electronics and appliances from JB Hi-Fi, and haircuts at Just Cuts; and that's only the J's!
At some point during your busy Belconnen weekend, you'll need to grab a bite to eat. Head down Emu Bank on the southern portion of Lake Ginninderra and you'll find plenty of great places to get your fill. With establishments like The London Burger and Beers, Ha Ha Bar & Dining Room, Bella Vista Restaurant, The Lighthouse Bar, and Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, you're sure to find something that suits your taste.
The Belconnen Fresh Food Markets were established in 1976 and have been a favourite spot for Belconnen local foodies ever since. Not only can you get some of Canberra's freshest produce, you also get an incredible variety of products in one place. With delicatessens, fruit and vegetables, meats, and organic foods, all of your fresh produce needs can be met and you only have to find one parking space!
If you're feeling particularly brave in these cool winter temperatures, head along to Yerra Beach, located on the western shores of Lake Ginninderra. Here you'll find an area for swimming that's roped off from the greater lake. Containing a small island and an anchored raft, this is a great little spot for a mid-winter dip.
With so much to do, living in Belconnen means your weekends are never boring. If you're interested in exploring property options in our area, get in touch with the team at Ray White Belconnen.
