The top 5 things about living in Belconnen!

By Ben Faulks

It will come as no surprise to locals that Belconnen is one of the best places to live in Canberra – but it can be a little tougher when you don't know the area!

If you're considering making the move to Belconnen, take a look at our top five reasons why it's the best spot in the city! Or, if you're already a Belco local, see if you agree…

1. Universities and schools

Belconnen is right in the heart of Canberra, and here, it has incredible access to a number of top educational facilities.

The University of Canberra, for example, is just 26 years old but is quickly rising up the ranks in both Australia and the world. The World University Rankings was updated in September, and saw UC move to 24th place in Australia (up from 28 a year prior), and is now in the 401-500 band for the world, up from 501-600 last year. Vice Chancellor and President Professor Deep Saini was extremely pleased with those results, and has pledged to continue creating even higher results in research and teaching.

As well as this, the Australian Institute of Sport is just down the road, and is behind many an international sports superstar's success. Additionally, there are roughly 60 primary and high schools dotted around the area, offering a range of choice for younger learners.

2. Westfield Belconnen

Westfield Belconnen – or simply, Belconnen Mall – is a shopper's paradise.

There are more than 270 stores in the mall, making it one of the largest shopping centres in the city. There are fashion shops, banks, jewellery stores, sportswear outlets, bakeries, homewares goods, and everything in between.

Many Belconnen locals will simply be able to walk to this convenient location, but the bus network makes it easy for those who don't have their own transport to visit as well.

3. Lake Ginninderra

Young or old, studying or working, everybody loves a great outdoor space where you can relax, exercise, and simply get away from the stresses of everyday life.

Lake Ginninderra in the heart of Belconnen offers just that. The body of water, created in 1974, is 104hectares large, and includes a walking and running track around its perimeter. There are plenty of spots to stop along the way, such as jetties, BBQ pits, playgrounds and picnic tables, making it a wonderful place to spend an evening after work or a relaxing Sunday with a book.

4. Canberra Stadium

Love your sports? Look no further than Belconnen and Bruce, as this is where you'll find the city's premier sporting venue.

This is the home of the Canberra Raiders and the University of Canberra Brumbies, and offers more than 25,000 seats for heart-stopping live action. There are regular matches on offer here for anyone who loves watching sports without the ad breaks.

5. The Belconnen Markets

Finally, the Belconnen Markets is one of the most iconic spots in the area, with people travelling from all over the city to peruse its endless stalls and shops.

It is the oldest fresh food market in Canberra, offering locally grown food for the past 40 years. Here, you can stock up on all your fresh fruit and veggies for the week, or simply stroll amongst the stalls picking up snacks, coffees and treats along the way as you catch up with friends.

The markets are open five days a week (with some stores operating every single day), and often host special events such as the upcoming Spring Festival with cooking demonstrations, face painting, food samples, and more.
