Who doesn't want to live in a strong, supportive community? Knowing that you and your neighbours look after each other and local institutions is key to improving quality of life in any given area. Whether it's improved infrastructure or new local healthcare, residents with real estate in Belconnen have had some excellent support from nearby institutions – and that is set to continue with new grants from the West Belconnen Local Services Network (Network).
Part of the government-backed Better Services, Network is granting funds of up to $5,000 to Belconnen residents who have a community-minded project that otherwise may not be able to access enough capital to complete it.
Yvette Berry, Member of Parliament, describes how the funding is intended to target projects that are focused on any of four areas: better starts for kids, providing employment pathways for young Canberrans, connecting older people or supporting strong family bonds.
However, Ms Berry also explains that this is only a single branch of multiple initiatives that are taking place in West Belconnen.
"Recently, the Spark Training and Employment Initiative was launched, a key component of the West Belconnen residential development," she said in an ACT government media release.
"Spark will work in collaboration with local stakeholders and government agencies to develop a range of education, engagement, training and employment options for people within the West Belconnen and Belconnen region."
The Our Community grants program is clearly a part of a greater grassroots push for a better community in Belconnen and the surrounding areas.
